In past issues we’ve given thanks to the FAME organization and WNSO (World Natural Sports Organization) for sending us information about and photos of some of their athletes and models for use in Natural Champion magazine. This issue we are pleased to be able to profile the young lady who has sent us most of the foregoing info…Lisa Hughes, who is herself a successful competitor in FAME and other fitness events.
When we asked for information and photos, the ever efficient Lisa promptly sent the following in a neat formatted response to our questions:

TRAINING PHILOSOPHY: Never give up! Anything worthwhile isn’t easy! If it were easy, everyone would be doing it!
CONTEST DIET: Troy Thompson of Dorian Yates Approved Canada is in charge of my diet, so whatever he tells me to put into my body, I do it! He is great for getting competitors stage ready. He changes my diet by weekly, then when I get closer to stage ready, we go week by week.
Here’s a sample of one of his diets:
1 egg, 4 egg whites, 36 g oatmeal
Same as MEAL 1
130g Eye of the round steak 130g yam
130g chicken, handful almonds and cashews
130g tuna, handful almonds and cashews salad
Pro-Peptide shake with flax seed oil
** 6-8 litres of water/day, Pro Vital Vitamins every morning and night, and Pro Glutamine on an empty stomach.
NUTRITION/EATING PHILOSOPHY: Stop weighing yourself. Listen to your body! If you feel good, its working! If you are getting headaches or sick, time to change! Find yourself someone who is excellent at this stuff and only listen to them! If you listen to too many people, your body won’t respond.
SUMMARY OF YOU:
HOW DID YOU GET INTO COMPETING?
I used to go to watch friends compete in bodybuilding shows, and I would admire the fitness girls. I always wanted to do that. One day I said, that’s it! I’m going to try it! It brings together everything I have ever been interested in: weights, cardio, gymnastics, cheerleading, martial arts – and now I can do it all in one!
BIGGEST CHALLENGE COMPETING:
Overcoming injuries! Doing fitness on a tough stage is very difficult and my body pays for it! In the off-season, I have to do all rehabilitative exercises for most of my tendons and joints. Pre-contest, I have to ice everywhere almost every night.
BIGGEST STRENGTH/BIGGEST WEAKNESS:
My biggest strength is my ability to multitask and work well under pressure. I can work 3 or 4 jobs at once, work out 3 times a day, diet and still find time for friends and family.
My biggest weakness is also my biggest strength. I sometimes can overload myself. I am working on myself, and not being such a workaholic anymore. It has been a challenge, since work is my poison. This is probably why I compete! So that I can take time away from working 17 hour days!
ADVICE TO GIVE SOMEONE LOOKING TO COMPETE:
Make sure you really want to do it! Don’t do it if it is not for yourself! I am not a very strong runner, so I don’t run marathons. Whatever sport you want to compete in, make sure you love it and are passionate about it, because it takes a lot of mental energy, as well as physical energy and time.
FONDEST MEMORY OF FAME:
At FAME Centrals last year, we were getting ready to get on stage for the finals, and right before we went on stage, the power went out! It stayed out for over an hour! I wasn’t expecting that! The athletes sat on the stage, and we all told different stories and jokes, almost like sitting around a campfire! The power was out in the entire neighbourhood!
Lisa recently informed us that she is no longer with FAME and WNSO and we wish her the very best in her new endeavors.
